Why do some people refer to God as G-d?

What are the reasons?

As for religious people writing god that way, it is mostly Jewish believers as to show respect for their divine entity:

The words “God” and “Lord” (used for the Hebrew Adonai) are often written by many Jews as “G-d” and “L-rd” as a way of avoiding writing a name of God, so as to avoid the risk of sinning by erasing or defacing his name.

If an atheist does it, I think it’s just a jokey way of suggesting that 'God’ is a dirty word. I don’t think it has any deeper significance.
