I feel awful

To think that nearly everything I have ever been told about the world is a lie, and there is no paradise, makes me feel so depressed. What should I do?

P.S. What does the teapot beside the word atheist mean/represent?

You might want to spend some time on the exchristian.net forums – there are lots of people there who have gone from theist to atheist, though I suspect from your choice of words that you were not a christian, you would still be welcome there.

Sorry to hear that. It’s not unusual for people to feel deeply unsettled by realising that their former view of the world was mistaken.

The good news is that it gets better. Reading some of the many de-conversion stories on the web often shows a progression from desperation and despair to freedom and fulfilment.

If you’re feeling down, then you really must not sit around and wallow in it, but get out and get involved in the world. My advice would be to get out and meet some new people – not necessarily atheists, just people with similar interests who aren’t going to talk religion the whole time.

Not everything you have been told about the world is a lie. If that was true, you would be a non-functioning lump. You don’t need to start from scratch. Find something in your old belief system that still rings true and apply it as an bridge to the new self that you are building.

It is OK to feel awful. It will pass.

There is no Heaven. That doesn’t mean there’s no place on Earth that can ever be your paradise. If you want it, you have to find it, or make it. Concentrate on making this life all it can be.

The teapot refers to Russell’s Teapot. Bertrand Russell reasoned that it’s impossible to disprove that there’s a small china teapot in orbit around the Sun, but that’s no reason to believe that it’s there. Likewise, the impossibility of disproving the existence of a god isn’t a good reason to believe there is one.
