Is there a god?

It depends on what you mean by “god”.

The vast majority of definitions that I’ve come across are sufficiently confused and non-specific that the question “is there a god?” is equivalent to “is there a quafnoodle?”

For example, what does the word “is” mean in relation to an entity that is supernatural in nature (what does the word “entity” mean in this context? (what does “supernatural” mean?)))

Until a reasonable definition exists – one similar to the definition for “chair” – I think it’s a silly question.

You can always say that “god is love” or “god is peace”, in which case you’ve equated god with an abstraction and therefore defined he/she/they/it out of existence.

I think, by now, we’re all aware of the philosophical danger in answering this question with a dogmatic “no”. It’s possible that there are gods, somewhere, it’s just that we don’t see evidence for them on this planet, in our recent history – which is where they’d be relevant to us.

Then again, the major religions aren’t helping their case, by claiming their gods are omnipotent and omnipresent, so space and time are no limitation. Even more bizarre to contemplate is the idea that gods – with all the fun godly things they could be doing – are going to bother to come here and mess with our boring little minds. Nah – highly unlikely.

No.

Am I absolutely sure? No.

Is a god likely enough that it’s worth living as if there is one? No.

Do we have any idea how we would go about living for a god, given that even if there is one we don’t know which god it is? No.

Does that worry me? No.

(I appreciate that this question may have been an invitation to copy the God FAQ website, the entire contents of which is, “Q: Is there a god? A: No.”)

I can just as comfortably say there isn’t a God, god, gods, Creator or Goddess as I can say there isn’t a Cthulhu, griffin, thirty-metre unicorn, Great Green Arkleseizure, Flying Spaghetti Monster or Captain James T. Kirk.

The evidence for all of those mythical creatures is the same: None.
