Can you direct us to a source for info about percentage of non-theists in a certain area? We hope to move at retirement to an area where we can “breathe free” as atheists.

A good place for statistics on religious uptake is adherents.com – according to their stats on atheist populations, Sweden or Vietnam might be good choices. 8)
If you mean the USA specifically, try this map of “unclaimed / unchurched” (such chutzpah!) released by a Catholic mission. For example, within the state of Colorado, you can see the difference between the north of the state, with Colorado State University in Fort Collins, and the south of the state, with the Colorado Springs megachurches. More surprising, to me, is the way Florida has several counties with low religion, which might make a good place to retire to.
