Where can atheists live a 'free' life?

How do atheists avoid living in a country governed by people who believe in religion that is biased and uncertain of truth?
Our laws in this country are based upon Christianity, which is far from what atheists believe in, is there anywhere in the world that I can live in that is a non-religious zone?

Most modern industrialized states have populations who are less religious than that of the United States. This is true even in nations that still have an “official” religion.

However, although the U.S. government certainly kowtows to the religious in many ways, I think it is still possible to live freely as an atheist here. For example, I live in a fairly conservative area and have made no secret of my own opinions.

I would prefer to stay here and work to restore the wall of separation between government and religions and to promote science, reason and human-centered values than to abandon this society for another.

Scandinavia’s a good start. The laws might have been based on religion at some point, but the irreligious majority in some countries up there is up around 70%. Modern dogma has poor control over the populace, if any.
