Was the Christian eschatology the reason for writing the gospels late?

Since the early Christians believed the end of the World to be very near, what would have been the point of writing the gospels? and for whom?
I even think Jesus Himself missed the point, as he expected the swift accomplishment of the kingdom of God here on Earth. He assured his disciples: “I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place.” Am I mistaken?

Questions like this strike me as being more akin to, “Well, how many pieces did Humpty Dumpty split into,” than anything else. You’re asking questions about the tedious details of a fairy tale.

Certainly, Christian eschatology might have been a reason for the delay in writing the gospels. Frankly, it seems more than likely there was more than one reason. So you probably are correct in suggesting as much.

Jesus, on the other hand, was clearly wrong if he actually made the statement attributed to him in the passage you quoted.
