Primitive superstitions involving the supernatural and invoking magic demonstrated both our problem solving abilities – without science, it was the best we could do – and our gullibility. We certainly can do better at present. The scientific method is a proven way of weeding out our wonky proclivities, amassing solid and useful knowledge, and deepening our understanding of nature.
Modern religion, that is monotheistic religion, is basically primitive superstition that has been formalized into politically oriented and powerful organizations who churn out self-propagating, non-evidential information and the rituals that cement these non-evidential beliefs into a world view that is passed on from generation to generation, thusly maintaining the status quo of these non-evidential beliefs and their associated organizations through their indoctrinated (often from birth) and loyal members (who cleave steadfastly and dutifully to their faith-based beliefs because 'evidentially’ they are the true ones), shielding and sheltering them from reality and evidence which strongly call into question these beliefs.
Religion is a most vicious circle.
