The Chinese dress is one of the most recognizable traditions of the Asian continent in the world. The traditional Chinese costumes convey elegance, design and tradition both Chinese citizens themselves (showing enough respect for this art) and foreign citizens who simply want to approach the culture of clothing from China.
There are different types of Chinese dresses but the most famous are the qipao and the changshan, two of the most stylish traditional costumes we can find in the history of the Asian country. At present, these suits are very well seen from the West and represent a symbol of nobility, elegance and well-being for the Chinese.
History of China's dress In the XVII century, the Qing Dynasty was established in China, creator of this type of Chinese dress that was used by both men and women. Surprisingly, this garment was easy to make, since it was simply made of a piece of silk adorned with a cord on both the neck and the sleeves of the dress.
Due to its neatness, elegance and comfort, this Chinese dress became a popular garment in high places, being used by a large part of the members of the different Chinese dynasties.
The first models of this garment so sophisticated (at first glance) were wide and covered much of the body, discovering only the hands, feet and head. However, times change and more in the world of fashion, so the garment was updated to more modern models. The traditional qipao underwent an update in the city of Shanghai, which opted for a more modern cut to enhance the figure of the Chinese woman, turning this garment into an authentic traditional symbol of Chinese culture.
This update of the dress supposed an approach to the western culture, presenting a garment more in agreement to the modern world with cropped sleeves and turned neck. In addition, the black color with transparencies and the different adornments that accompanied the dress of China made that this attire had a great acceptance among the oriental population.
After the establishment of the Republic, the traditional qipao stopped being used. However, immigrants from Shanghai, moved this art of Chinese culture to Hong Kong, where it is used even today for different events or traditional Chinese festivals.
The use of this Chinese dress is frequent and has become a tradition of Chinese culture, like Venetian masks or Japanese kimonos.
It is more common to relate the traditional dress of China with women than with men. The style and design of this type of traditional Chinese clothing is more focused on women, so it is logical that the commercial use of these garments has focused more on the female market.
When we think of famous Chinese dresses, it is very likely that we come to mind Chinese women wearing wide silk dresses, also called Hanfu, or very beautiful clothes very tight, called Qipao.
Today, the Chinese fashion market is one of the most powerful in the world. Chinese society welcomes any foreign product with open arms and is eager and willing to westernize. However, there are increasingly better brands of Chinese clothing, with designs heavily influenced by trends in South Korea, Japan and the West in general.
Today, one of the most important clothing production and distribution centers in China is located in Shenzhen, in the Nanyou neighborhood, where hundreds of wholesale Chinese clothing stores are located.
